A Message to Tattoo Vendors and Manufacturers

The tattoo industry is at a crossroads.

New government regulations are forming, and if we don’t create and enforce our own clear standards for product safety and transparency, outside agencies will.
And when they do, tattoo artists, vendors, and manufacturers will have no voice in shaping the rules.

TattStencil and TattSafe were created to protect our craft by uniting artists and vendors who believe in full transparency, safety, and standing together as one industry.

We are starting with inks, but the movement will not stop there.

In time, every product artists rely on: stencil solutions, soaps, ointments, aftercare, and beyond must meet the same standard of full, honest disclosure.

Why Transparency Matters

Tattoo artists deserve to know exactly what they are using on — and in — their clients’ skin.

Vague SDS sheets, grouped ingredient listings, and incomplete disclosures have created an environment where artists are left guessing — and where long-term health, legal, and professional risks are growing silently.

True transparency protects everyone:

  • The artist

  • The client

  • The product manufacturer

  • The future of tattooing itself

Clear disclosure builds trust, strengthens reputations, and keeps the craft in artist hands — where it belongs.

Under the Commercial Item Preference Act, U.S. government agencies are required to prefer commercially available solutions over creating new government-made ones — if an effective standard already exists.

That means, If we, as an industry, build clear, effective safety and transparency standards today, regulators will be required to recognize and prefer them.

If we don't, we risk being subjected to regulations written without our experience, our insight, or our values.

What We Ask From Vendors

  • Assign an employee to manage your TattSafe Connect Data.

  • Full ingredient CI/CAS number disclosure (where applicable)

  • Accurate ingredient percentages — Accurate ingredient disclosures are encouraged — including listing actual pigments used in each formula, rather than broad pigment groups that span multiple products.
We respect proprietary formulas, but artists deserve to know which pigments are present in the inks they use.

  • A commitment to continuous transparency as industry expectations evolve

This isn’t about meeting the minimum. It’s about raising the bar — and keeping tattooing in the hands of those who built it.

Stand With Us

Tattooing was born from artists, not regulators. If we stand together now, we can protect our industry, strengthen our reputations, and build a future we’re proud of. If we wait, we risk losing control to agencies and corporations that don’t understand — and never will.
